Trust Your Gut - It Will Never Let You Down
What you are feeling is right. Just trust the process.
I’ve got a pretty long history of decision making both personally and professionally. In fact, I’m in the process of making a rather important decision right now which is why I decided to write this post.
Often my kids will ask how I arrived at a certain decision, and I said that I feel it in my gut. Whether it’s a work or life decision, trusting my gut is intuitive.
Here’s why.
Gut decisions are reliable, and are not random. In fact, they are based on a rapid appraisal of situations. We don’t always realize it, but the brain is constantly comparing our current situation with our memories of previous situations. So when you feel it in your gut, there’s more to it than just a feeling.
So how do we know when our gut is telling us to move forward with a decision or tuck tail and run?
When your gut reaction is positive, the feeling is often even-handed and generally unemotional. There is an overall positive tone to it. When the reaction is negative or fearful, you tend to get emotionally fired up. It’s usually anxious, dark or heavy with a pit in your stomach.
Tony Robbins offers a great way to determine whether that pit in your stomach is positive or negative.
Get in a comfortable seated or standing position. Close your eyes. Take a few deep, full breaths and allow your mind to settle. Then ask yourself the following question and pay careful attention to your instant reaction:
Does saying yes to this make me feel expansive or contracted?
Meaning if you imagine moving ahead with this decision, what happens in your body the second after you ask that question? Do you feel good? Or do you feel dread and does your heart literally sink?
Our body has this innate wisdom that goes beyond reason and logic. The best way to understand your body’s reaction is to feel your way through it, and remember that when those gut-based alarm bells go off, it’s for good reason.
So next time you are feeling that pit in your stomach, take a few breaths and let those immediate thoughts guide you in the right direction.
