Now that we heading into our second year of working essentially from home, it’s not hard to pick up some bad habits along the way. Whether there are dogs, children, laundry or Amazon trucks barreling down your driveway, there are countless ways to get distracted.
Developing effective time management skills can help you limit distractions and get the most of your day. We can get stuff done on time, provide better quality work, procrastinate less, and be more productive and efficient overall. Finally, with strong time management skills you strike a better balance between work and the more important pursuits in life (like using what’s inside the Amazon box).
One of the most effective ways I manage my time is with a $6 clicker that I bought from Amazon. The idea came from the following James Clear article.
The article is about the “Paper Clip Strategy”. We read about a twenty-three-year-old rookie stock broker named Trent Dyrsmid who went on to have great success using this simple daily habit.
Dyrsmid put two jars on his desk. One was filled with 120 paper clips and the other was empty. Each time he made a sales call, he would move one paper clip to the empty jar until he made 120 sales calls. Within 18 months he was bringing over $5 million to the firm.
As a salesperson, we exist in a world of 24-hour access, so naturally, I struggle with when to call it a day. I could literally work around the clock reaching out to leads and never turn my day off.
After reading this article, I began managing my day using this clicker. Each day, I set a goal of reaching out to a minimum of 25 clients. Once I’ve hit that goal of 25, I know that I’ve put in the necessary work and I can feel good walking away and pursuing other things.
Somedays I get responses and other times I can go days without hearing a peep. But at the end of each day, I can turn off my computer knowing that I’ve put in enough work to meet my goals and move my business forward.
My clicker is a simple daily reminder. Never forget that success comes from consistency and just putting in the work.

2020 was quite a year. I’m sure your use of swear words increased like mine since March. If you are looking to dial it back and hold yourself accountable in 2021, a Swear Jar is a great solution - build a great habit or pay the price. The Swear Jar is a growler-shaped vessel ready to hold all the coins you deposit for your naughty language. Each holds 64 fl oz. of cash.
All during the month of January, I’m asking my subscribers to share this post or the GoGetter with five of your friends.
After sharing, you can email me at sryan40@gmail.com and at the end of the month, I'll randomly draw five winners to win a SWEAR JAR.
Thanks for sharing and good luck!
