Start a Hobby-Your Brain Will Thank You
Hobbies have a wealth of benefits and they're fun. Don't wait!
I can’t believe I waited this long. At the ripe old age of (I’m not telling), I finally pursued the hobby of learning how to paint with oils.
Each week, I take lessons and then spend the next seven days enthusiastically tackling that painting. And while, while my painting above may make Jean Baptiste turn in his grave, pursuing a hobby is one of the smartest decisions you can make for your brain.
Here are a few reasons why.
Relieves Stress
While I’m painting, I am completely lost in my hobby. Painting is the one thing I can do all day and never tire. When you focus on something you love, there’s no room in that head of yours to stress. Whether that’s reading, gardening, cooking, a hobby allows you to focus solely on the present moment and eliminate any negative mental energy.
Brings A Smile To Your Face
Who doesn’t want something to smile about these days. Hobbies will do that for you. When you work on something completely optional and something you love, you feel a rush of excitement and joy and gain all those benefits from being happy.
Stimulates The Mind
It’s a great way to learn something new, break up the day and the mundane. I’ve learned so much about painting - colors, temperatures, values, to slow down and see the complete picture. I hone these lessons doing something I enjoy and they carry over to things more important.
Gain Confidence
Picking up a new hobby helps build confidence as you practice and improve. And you will. It’s a huge confidence booster that can carry over to other areas of your life.
Learn to Problem Solve
When you take the time to focus on something you enjoy, you give your brain space and allows time to refocus once you return to work. You’ll see that problems that seemed impossible before soon have a solution because of the mental break you earned.
Don’t wait as long as I did! Pursue that hobby you’ve always wanted today and make yourself an even better and more valuable person tomorrow.
