If there was a year to stress the importance of being open-minded, this would be the one. (I wish we thought of a better way to bring attention to it). I wanted to share why being open minded is a must for your professional and personal growth.
From a work standpoint, being openly minded is a critical quality. If you are not open to different ideas and perspectives you are going to have a difficult time understanding factors that contribute to problems or come up with effective solutions. Problem-solving skills are key to professional growth and being a great team player. That should be motivation enough.
Personally, it makes you a better overall person. For your personal growth, you should always ask questions and actively searching for information that can challenge your beliefs.
It makes you a nice person to be around. People should be comfortable expressing their opinions and beliefs even if you don’t agree with them. Open-minded people don’t get angry when they are wrong and they have empathy for other people which has a host of benefits as well.
Thinking about my own company, my business partner and I often see things differently. Decisions for business should be deliberate and well thought out. I tend to let my emotions and excitement get the best of me and want to rush into decisions. My business partner tends to be more measured, even cautious based on his past experiences. In the end, because I’m willing to listen and be open-minded (even if sometimes I need to take a few breaths first) we generally arrive right at the right decision. Imagine if I didn’t listen and consider his opinion? The mistakes would just pile on.
In short, being open-minded has a wealth of benefits:
You gain new insight and fresh insights about the world and yourself
You open up to new experiences and learn new things
Being openly minded helps you grow as a person
It makes you a stronger person mentally
You’ll have a more optimistic approach to life
So keep those doors open when it comes to your thoughts and beliefs and you’ll be pleasantly surprised at what walks through.
Two more things before you go….
I’ve made a effort to eliminate all non-work-related social media (another post for another time) but I do have a twitter account called @thegogettersr where I share articles I like about personal growth. Go ahead and follow if that’s your thing.
Finally, I’m approaching 25 subscribers and looking to be at 50 by the end of the month. It’s all about small incremental goals. If you enjoy this newsletter, please share this post and thegogetter with friends. Many thanks.
