The more we genuinely care about others the greater our own inner happiness and peace - Allan Lokos
We’ve all read about the power of 1% gains. With this idea that we strive to be 1% better every week, we will see huge gains over time. 1% gains can come in the form of many things - your health, skills, finances, relationships, athletic performance, and more.
What I’d like to think about is how do we make 1% gains in giving back.
A lot of the time when we think about ways to give back or making a difference, we tend to get caught in the idea that we can’t make an impact. We fall into this trap where we think only massive action will achieve anything significant. With that attitude, many tend us to simply give up trying.
1% gains, or incremental change, can be a powerful way of making a difference. Changing your focus and thinking in small increments is less daunting, takes less energy and you’ll realize larger gains over time.
Let me give you an example of how I am trying to apply this 1% method in my way of giving back.
I’m a big believer that the biggest gap between those with opportunities and those without is technology. Think about it - if you are someone who does not have access to technology your chances are severely limited for success.
Instead of thinking I need to start a foundation, I’ve decided to reach out to my local library and ask how I can help provide more access to those in need. With their help, I’ve purchased Amazon Echos to provide more resources to the technology center.
The 1% giving approach works. Here’s why:
It’s Tangible - Giving back in small ways allows you to directly see the impact. A smile on someone’s face, the relief of a hot meal, or a compassionate ear to listen.
You Are Being Positive - Giving back is a positive action. You set a good example for others around you.
The Power of Believing - The power of small incremental change means you believe that you can make a difference. That kind of positivity is infectious too and much needed today.
It Makes You Good Looking - If that’s not enough, studies have shown that giving back makes you more attractive!
Here are just a few ideas of how you can make a change today…
Don’t burden yourself with how to cure hunger - simply buy a meal for someone hungry.
You won’t eliminate unemployment but today you can reach out and offer advice to someone looking for work.
You may not cure the issue of Mental Health but you can reach out to help someone who is suffering and be willing to listen.
Small incremental change is not intimidating. It’s a powerful way for you to do something small, something now, and start a ripple effect that can lead to change.
Two more things before you go….
